Diamonds and Pearls Home Video Collection (1992)

Visually extravagant, Diamonds and Pearls Home Video Collection transforms 11 cuts from the Purple Executive's multiplatinum 1991 album into bloated video opera. Other than the Spike Lee-directed collage, ''Money Don't Matter 2 Night,'' the individual videos stand out mostly for their prettiness. With their Day-Glo sets, large supporting casts, and sensuous choreography, such aural masturbations as ''Gett Off'' and ''Cream'' engage the viewer precisely because they're so garish. But the more muted numbers — ''Strollin','' ''Diamonds and Pearls'' — only expose the flimsiness of the songs themselves. B-
