Veteran alto sax soul man Maceo Parker, best known for work with James Brown, continues his winning streak on his third solo album in as many years. Life on Planet Groove's live session's gracefully fermented, pre-hip-hop mode of funk-making hits home. Flanked by J.B. hornmen Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley, among others, Parker commandeers a bona fide soul revue. All that's missing is their ex-boss. B
