In God We Trust (1992)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Brand Nubian; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Unbowed by the departure of lyricist Puba (whose solo debut is now scaling the charts), this New York trio stays the course, slathering Black Muslim rhetoric over beats designed to make your head spin. Brand Nubian's In God We Trust may be intricate and clever, but it's also profoundly humorless. Even the band's attempt at a love song, ''Love Me or Leave Me Alone,'' fails to introduce us to the men behind the mikes. B
