Yes, Philip Glass built his new symphony on themes from David Bowie's 1977 album Low, but that doesn't make the new work rock & roll. Nor does Low Symphony ride the repeated swelling waves of Glass' trademark minimalism. Bowie who took a bow at the premiere may have inspired America's top classical composer to find a freer, more lyrical, and more richly narrative style, one that echoes symphonic tradition and goes straight to a listener's heart.
