Whether you call them commix or graphic novels, cartoons for grown-ups are in these days, and Charles Burns is a master of the genre. Skin Deep: Tales of Doomed Romance shows him alternately at his bleakest and most uncharacteristically wholesome. In the scorching ''Burn Again'' a junkie evangelist meets his ruthless one-eyed maker. ''Dog Days'' stars the benign Dog-Boy, whose transplanted dog heart explains his goofy canine capers. ''A Marriage Made in Hell'' features a newlywed who discovers her husband's wartime reconstructive surgery was, well, misdirected. Burns' precisionist style and over-the-top tales make for good, mutant fun. A
