The Monterey International Pop Festival (1992)

Guess I'm just not hip, but the best moments of this fabled 1967 pop festival for me were provided by two of its least legendary acts — Country Joe & the Fish and, gulp, Eric Burdon & the Animals. But I only saw the movie. D.A. Pennebaker's documentary couldn't possibly capture every memorable moment of this bandfest, though, and with its four CDs and muy impressive 95-page booklet, The Monterey International Pop Festival delivers surprisingly more. Of course Jimi Hendrix, the Who, Otis Redding, and Big Brother & the Holding Company are here; even cooler, though, are previously unheard performances by the Byrds, Butterfield Blues Band, Electric Flag, Blues Project, Booker T. & the MGs, the Association, and Lou Rawls. Most everything is priceless, but what's astounding, really, is the consistently high quality of the music. Not to mention the psychedelic middle part of the Animals' ''Hey Gyp.'' A
