It's the Battle of the Video Stars: Jean-Claude Van Damme versus Dolph Lundgren as Vietnam casualties who get brought back to life (in 1994) as part of a secret commando team of genetically enhanced superhumans. Deep down inside, however, they're still the same guys they were before they died: Van Damme, the good soldier who goes AWOL in search of his former self; Lundgren, the psycho who goes on a killing spree while tracking down Van Damme. The sci-fi hardware and chase-movie momentum keep things rolling toward the climactic clash of titans. But Universal Soldier is just typical genre fare. Halfway through, you'll be tempted to skip the preliminaries and fast-forward right to the main event. C+
