Ballantine Books had to recall 40,000 copies of Carole Walter's Great Cakes last February after a reader pointed out that one of the recipes called for lilies of the valley, which are poisonous. Said the publisher, ''We're just happy that lilies of the valley are not in season right now.'' We think we'll stick with the devil's food, thanks.
