No Nonsense (1991)

EW's GRADE
D

Details Lead Performance: Barbara Mandrell; Genre: Country

Mandrell took a hiatus from recording after a debilitating 1984 car wreck. But whatever she's been through in recent yearsand her voice seems — throatier for it — she still gravitates toward the airiest of country-pop confections in No Nonsense, such as ''Men and Trains,'' in which she yearns for a lover ''who slows in the curves/But can pour on the coal with a lot of reserve.'' Even when she sings about deeper concerns, such as the relationship between a mother and child (''I'll Leave Something Good Behind''), she trivializes the songs with excessive outpourings of melodramatic emotion. Mandrell may have been country when country wasn't cool, but she's a middle- of-the-road mama now. D
