Already buoyed by awards, nominations, and plenty of Oscar hubbub, Penny Marshall's Awakenings got off to a good start during its first week of wide release, racking up more than $8 million at 1,280 screens. The Jean-Claude Van Damme actioner Lionheart also opened to healthy numbers (at this point, that's par for the course for martial-arts extravaganzas), but Sally Field's political thriller Not Without My Daughter proved a tepid performer.
