A letter from the publisher -- The truth about Madonna

Madonna's new movie, Truth or Dare, opened with all the attention, interest, and of course, controversy that we've come to expect from everything she does. Party on, Madonna. Right? Well, not entirely. Because, if dared to tell the whole truth, I'd have to say that the Material Girl has a heart of gold.

What was almost lost in all the publicity surrounding Truth or Dare is that Madonna turned the film's Los Angeles and New York premieres into AIDS benefits. Entertainment Weekly was privileged to underwrite these events and serve as cohost with Miramax Films of the two evenings. Combined, the premieres raised more than $200,000 to help in the ongoing fight against acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

This was not Madonna's first contribution to the AIDS battle. Dr. Mathilde Krim, founding cochair of the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR), says, ''Few people in the entertainment industry have responded more selflessly and compassionately to the AIDS epidemic than Madonna. Not only has she been tireless in her efforts to raise awareness about AIDS, but she has also raised desperately needed funds for care and research.''

According to Dr. Krim, Madonna's efforts to date have brought in nearly $1 million to support the work that AmFAR does. And this figure does not even reflect the help she has given to other AIDS organizations.

Our magazine has also made a commitment to help stop AIDS. Entertainment Weekly's contributions have included donating advertising space for AIDS fund-raising campaigns and sponsoring such events as the national launch party for the album Red Hot + Blue last fall. A collection of Cole Porter's music performed by such leading contemporary artists as U2, Sinéad O'Connor, the Neville Brothers, and David Byrne, Red Hot + Blue sales so far have raised more than $1 million dollars for AmFAR.

As a magazine that covers the world of entertainment — a world particularly hard hit by AIDS — we wanted to involve ourselves in the fight. But the AIDS virus knows no boundaries, industry or otherwise. It is a problem for all of us, and only our united efforts will bring the crisis to an end.
