Details Lead Performance: Hoodoo Gurus; Genre: Rock

The Hoodoo Gurus, a band of unaffected popsters from Sydney, Australia, are in a rut. Their new record, Kinky, the band's fifth, is much like their fourth or third, with an occasional stellar pop ditty (''I Don't Mind'' is this year's example) on an album awash with mildly funny tunes, intermittently energetic rhythms, and occasionally engaging songwriting. The music is often pleasant and rarely off-putting, but it's nothing more than that. A new song like ''1000 Miles Away'' has got some very pretty singing and a bitchin' melody line, but its insights on travel are truly banal. Elsewhere the band tries to be goofy but just seems pallid. These guys need someone to come in and turbocharge their sound and their humor. C
