Cats at Work is a far meow from the typical cat book. No basketfuls of beribboned kittens here, just lots of workaday felines (restaurant cats, bar cats, bakery cats, boutique cats, theater cats, factory cats, chess-club cats) doing what cats do best: striking poses, cadging food, sleeping, marauding, and getting in the way. Fetching comments from the owners (''Groucho is our percussive kitty extraordinaire'') should have been scratched. B+
