This week we see something rare: The same record sits at No. 1 on both the pop and jazz album charts. That record, of course, is Natalie Cole's Unforgettable, her reworking of songs made famous by her father, Nat King Cole. Which might evoke a raised eyebrow, because why should a straight-ahead rendition of pop standards be labeled jazz? The answer might be that Natalie Cole's '50s-style singing sounds closer to jazz than it does to the rock, dance, and R&B records that trail it in the pop top 10-or, more cynically, that record companies need to place their product on as many charts as possible, the better to boost their sales.
