In a week when familiar series dominated the ratings, the biggest news was made by The Elvis Files, an Aug. 14 syndicated special. Nielsen includes only network shows in its rankings; otherwise, Elvis would have placed among the week's most-watched shows. As fall draws closer, the hole gets deeper for NBC, which will have to pull off several programming coups to keep its first-place ranking next season. After finishing on top for six years, the Peacock Network has hit what may be more than a summer-long slump; last week, Cheers and Unsolved Mysteries were NBC's only top 20 shows. And as CBS' Monday lineup-Murphy Brown, Designing Women, and Northern Exposure-threatens to take up permanent residence in the top 10, NBC's formerly unbeatable Thursday series continue to erode. + LAST VIEWERS* TOP TEN WEEK 1 22.9 MOVIE: ROMANCING THE STONE - ABC, Sunday, 9 p.m. 22.9 ROSEANNE 8 ABC, Tuesday, 9 p.m. 3 20.5 60 MINUTES 1 CBS, Sunday, 7 p.m. 4 20.0 AMERICA'S FUNNIEST PEOPLE 6 ABC, Sunday, 8:30 p.m. 5 19.8 DESIGNING WOMEN 5 CBS, Monday, 9:30 p.m. 6 19.6 MURPHY BROWN 7 CBS, Monday, 9 p.m. 7 19.1 AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS 13 ABC, Sunday, 8 p.m. 8 19.0 CHEERS 3 NBC, Thursday, 9 p.m. 9 18.9 NORTHERN EXPOSURE 9 CBS, Monday, 10 p.m. 10 18.5 WHO'S THE BOSS? 46 ABC, Tuesday, 8:30 p.m.
