Set in 1957, this minor-league-baseball movie centers on Roy Dean Bream (William Russ), a 41-year-old relief pitcher finishing out his career. The early scenes have some humor and spunk, evoking the comic scruffiness of life in the class-D lane. Soon, though, that feisty spirit leaks away. The earnest Roy -- a man who knows how to do nothing but play baseball -- must face the fact that he's over the hill. The setup is so familiar, so obviously ''poignant,'' that we keep waiting for the movie to do something original with it, but Roy never becomes an interesting character.
