As usual with pics distributed by Troma (Fat Guy Goes Nutzoid, Surf Nazis Must Die), this one's title sums up its plot rather thoroughly. Invasion of the Space Preachers is a cross between an action movie (lots of low-budget shoot-outs with alien ray guns) and a Dukes of Hazzard-style exploitation comedy (lots of rednecks driving pickup trucks with topless girlfriends). This one may not be as meanspirited as most Troma productions; nobody here is unredeemingly geeky and the butt of other characters' jokes. But, as in nearly all of Troma's self-conscious homages to bad '50s drive-in flicks, Space Preachers' pacing is glacial. Moreover, its two young stars are a comedy team who can make you pine for such screen clowns as Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone. D+
