Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1991)

Details Movie Rated: Unrated; Genres: Action/Adventure, Comedy, Sci-fi and Fantasy; With: Guy Nelson and Jim Wolfe; Distributors: Rhino Video and Troma Studios

As usual with pics distributed by Troma (Fat Guy Goes Nutzoid, Surf Nazis Must Die), this one's title sums up its plot rather thoroughly. Invasion of the Space Preachers is a cross between an action movie (lots of low-budget shoot-outs with alien ray guns) and a Dukes of Hazzard-style exploitation comedy (lots of rednecks driving pickup trucks with topless girlfriends). This one may not be as meanspirited as most Troma productions; nobody here is unredeemingly geeky and the butt of other characters' jokes. But, as in nearly all of Troma's self-conscious homages to bad '50s drive-in flicks, Space Preachers' pacing is glacial. Moreover, its two young stars are a comedy team who can make you pine for such screen clowns as Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone. D+
