Lead Performance: Belinda Carlisle; Genre: Rock

On her fourth solo album, Live Your Life Be Free, former Go-Go Belinda Carlisle insists on foisting her dismally sunny, pseudo-spiritual vision on us: ''To believe in destiny, ooh, it will set you free.'' This approach has brought her big pop hits in the past -- 1987's ''Heaven Is a Place on Earth,'' for instance -- and her candied-gravel voice is pleasant enough here. But Carlisle's rabid perkiness suggests what might happen if you gave a bunch of animated forest critters free studio time. Frolicking through ''You Came out of Nowhere'' and ''I Plead Insanity,'' she's as devoid of passion as the synthesized drums pulsing behind her. ''Live Your Life Be Free'' ultimately chokes on its aggressively friendly sound and its dribbling sentiment. Rummaging around in her big pink plastic pocketbook of platitudes, Carlisle turns up little more than a handful of lint.
