Details Lead Performance: 2 Live Crew; Genre: R&B

When censorship rears its ugly head, definitions of art go begging. The point of contention during the 2 Live Crew's obscenity trials last year was not whether the four rappers' music stank, but whether it had the right to stink in a free society. But strip away First Amendment concerns and the 2 Live Crew stands revealed as a novelty act. Their new Sports Weekend (As Nasty As They Wanna Be Part II carries the burden of proving that kids will buy a 2 Live Crew record that isn't in the eye of a media hurricane. The outlook is grim: As nothing but unprintable titles, ugly gay-bashing, and spurious sexual boasting from guys who couldn't get women if they weren't in show biz, Sports Weekend might appeal to titillated 14-year-old boys who think this is what adulthood is like. Until they turn 15. D
