The New Russian Revolution (1991)

EW's GRADE
C

Details Movie Rated: Unrated; Genre: Documentary

Having cornered the global market in round-the-clock news coverage, CNN now turns to the quickie-headline-video business with The New Russian Revolution. This early effort, covering the recent abortive Soviet coup, has the thrown-together feel of a piece promoting a CNN special report rather than the report itself. There is too much reliance on flashy graphics, newsroom-action scenes, and snappy narration and too little insight into the subject at hand. Nowhere, for example, do we get substantive profiles of the coup plotters, and there is no big-picture attempt to track events swirling around the Russian republic's Parliament building, where brave Muscovites held Soviet troops at bay. At 47 minutes, this insubstantial, slick tape plays like a teaser. C
