The eponymous V.I. Warshawski is just like every private dick we know and love: drives a junky heap, has never heard of laundry soap, couldn't recite the refrigerator's contents under threat of a loaded Magnum. The makers of this detective story are banking on one difference: Kathleen Turner in the title role. She does have a way with a wisecrack (not to mention a nutcracker), but a gender switch is not enough to pull off another Thelma & Louise. Especially when the script has lines like ''Being a detective is no job for a girl like you.'' Clinkers notwithstanding, there's hardly a dull moment in the picture. There's just not a truly exciting one either. C+
