In the most impressive box office performance this fall, Martin Scorsese's dark thriller, Cape Fear, scared up $10.2 million its first weekend, averaging a spectacular $11,105 per screen. It was the biggest opening for any Scorsese film to date, and insiders expect the movie to gross a minimum of $60 million. Surprisingly, CinemaScore audiences didn't seem that wild about Cape Fear-they gave it an overall grade of B+. Nevertheless, the movie faces no current competition in the adult-thriller market and is expected to play well into the holiday season. In all other respects this was a tame week indeed, with Curly Sue holding steady and everything else in the top 10 struggling to nose past $20 million.
