Video Review

Indiscreet (1991)

EW's GRADE
D

Details Movie Rated: PG; Genres: Comedy, Romance; With: Lesley Anne-Down and Robert Wagner

The perpetrators of the anemic made-for-TV retread of Indiscreet, director Stanley Donen's Hitchcock homage, should have heeded the wise old saw — if it ain't broke, don't remake it. The 1958 original featured an affair between Cary Grant as a charming diplomat and Ingrid Bergman as a beautiful, talented, and famous but completely disenchanted stage actress, with one complication: He's married. Indiscreet was that rare thing: a sophisticated romantic comedy with enough feeling to crack open hearts. The remake can make the viewer forget he has one. Robert Wagner, flashing his pearlies with perfunctory regularity, can't approach Grant's league. Measuring the radiant Bergman against the beautiful but vacuous Down is like comparing apples and gourds. Original: A-; Remake: D
