Hollywood finally emerged from its postholiday doldrums with a couple of recent star-studded releases-Stella and Stanley & Iris. But Bette Midler, Robert De Niro, and Jane Fonda were knocked for a loop by aging martial artist Steven Seagal-who talks softly but carries a big kick. In Hard to Kill, only his second starring role, Seagal proved he can get the action crowd into theaters on opening day. We'll know soon whether or not the big guy's fists and feet have box-office legs.
