There was a conspicuous void on the airwaves last week: The Simpsons was missing from Fox's Sunday-night lineup, replaced by an episode of Cops. The switch proved just how powerful Fox's grip on Sunday night is: Cops' Sunday special finished 10th in the Nielsens; the show's regular Saturday-night edition came in 69th. Fox's In Living Color also has done well on Sunday, ranking 7th for the week. It should be interesting to see what happens when Fox returns the show to its original Saturday spot this fall. Last season its Saturday outings drew relatively small audiences. NBC's lock on Thursday night is looking equally secure. On July 5 the network put a failed pilot-a teen sitcom called Blossom-between The Cosby Show and Cheers, one of the safest slots (8:30 p.m.) on TV. Not surprisingly, the show performed impressively in the ratings, ranking No. 3. The new NBC comedy series Seinfeld continues to pull in big ratings on Thursdays, too, occupying the same magic time slot (9:30 p.m.) that made hits out of Night Court and Dear John.
