Take a Bow-Wow

Dog-Day Afternoon -- For a Broadway show based on ''The Thin Man,'' casting agents looked for a wire-haired terrier

The producers of a Broadway musical version of The Thin Man (1934) held tryouts Aug. 14, and it was enough to drive anybody arf crazy. More than 100 pooches — seven of them belonging to Charlotte Smith — tried to fetch the part of Asta, the jet-set pet in Nick & Nora. Though all five finalists were wire-haired terriers like the first Asta, hopefuls included beagles, a bulldog, and an actress in a doggie suit.

None of Bronx breeder Smith's wire-haireds were chosen as finalists. ''I have some prettier ones at home,'' says Smith, who lives with 20 terriers, ''but they're in heat.''
