With films about demonic murders (The Exorcist III), supernatural romance (Ghost), and the afterlife (Flatliners) heading the field, moviegoers definitely had otherworldly things on their minds as the summer wound down. When Twentieth Century Fox didn't screen The Exorcist III in advance for critics, word spread that the studio had a dog on its hands. So the film's devilishly strong opening weekend performance ($9.3 million) surprised many industry observers. How this latest version of William Peter Blatty's possession obsession will ultimately fare won't be clear for another week or two, but audiences gave it low grades in early surveys, so it could face a rapid descent into the box-office netherworld. Meanwhile, Ghost is on track to pass $100 million, and will probably end up as the summer's top-grossing movie. WEEKEND TOP TEN GROSS WEEKS IN GROSS* TO DATE RELEASE
