Dinah Jams (2012)

EW's GRADE
A-

Details Lead Performance: Dinah Washington; Genres: Jazz, Reissues

Washington is at her irreverent best on Dinah Jams, a studio jam session with three trumpets — Brown, the no-less-compelling Clark Terry, and an uncharacteristically restrained Maynard Ferguson (who nonetheless manages to vulgarize ''Summertime''). Dinah's shout chorus at the end of ''Lover Come Back to Me'' is the stuff of legend, and one of the bonus tracks, ''Crazy He Calls Me,'' is a wickedly funny send-up of Billie Holiday. Only Dinah could get away with it. Unfortunatley, the packaging is not up to the label's — or the music's — standard: The bonus tracks aren't listed on the CD; the liner notes seem to belong to a different album. A-
