The Professor's House Willa Cather (Vintage, $9.95) While she was alive Cather resisted paperback editions of her work as vehemently as she denied permission to film them. About the latter she was no doubt right, but classy reissues like this one are every bit as dignified as the great lady would have wished. Splendid reading, too. A

Failure to Zigzag Jane Vandenburgh (Avon, $8.95) The story of a young girl's relationship with her disturbed mother. Vandenburgh has a remarkable eye for the sometimes hilarious, sometimes poetic ways in which her characters' neuroses animate their daily routines. A
Shelley II Shelley Winters (Pocket Books, $5.95) Shelley serves up another bonbon of a book-the second chapter of her life and loves. She tries awfully hard to be irrepressible, and there are times when you wish someone would bridle her candor. But she's never boring. B
