For the first time, Angelina Jolie has acknowleged that the rumors of a marital split from Billy Bob Thornton are true. She tells Us magazine, which speculated on the state of their marriage in last week's issue, that the once-inseparable couple, who adopted a baby this spring, haven't seen each other since June 3 and have been living in separate hotels, and that they've seen each other only a total of one week in the last four months.

''I'm angry. I'm sad. It's a very difficult and sad time,'' Jolie tells the magazine. ''It was a real deep connection, a deep marriage, so it's not that simple to say this or that one thing caused the problems.'' However, she says, ''It's clear to me that our priorities shifted overnight.'' Specifically, ''he's focused on his music and career. I'm focused on my baby. It comes down to what's important to you.''

Jolie, 27, and Thornton, 46, had each been married before (she once, he four times) when they wed two years ago. In March, they adopted a Cambodian infant, a boy they named Maddox, but had to wait until May for U.S. immigration to clear the adoption (authorities had to determine that Maddox hadn't been sold to a Cambodian orphanage, an illegal but common practice). Jolie spent the spring with the baby abroad, shooting the movie ''Beyond Borders'' in Africa and Thailand and visiting refugee camps around the world in her capacity as a United Nations goodwill ambassador. Thornton visited her and the baby a few times since March but spent most of the past few months touring the U.S. and Europe with his band in support of his 2001 album ''Private Radio.'' In recent weeks, he went to Memphis to record a new album, while she is about to start filming the ''Tomb Raider'' sequel, called ''Lara Croft and the Cradle of Life'' on locations in England, Africa, and China.

Thornton's publicist tells the magazine, ''They're still very married.'' Says Jolie, ''We're not divorced yet. We're going through a difficult time. I'm not sure what will happen.''
