Fathers and sons. Sin and redemption. Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. The big issues are huge in this sumptuous and predigested, top-quality and overdetermined, serious and easy-reader movie from the director of American Beauty. Certainly Hanks and Newman are radiant with the blessings of unstoppered talent, and playing bad guys does them good. But there's too much measured ''perfection'' on display, and hell on earth is surely a less tidy, more interesting place. The (movie) stars in heaven are aligned here, but they're on the road to heck.
