On Wednesday, Us magazine published an interview with Angelina Jolie in which she acknowledged her separation from husband Billy Bob Thornton but added, ''We're not divorced yet.... I'm not sure what will happen.'' That same day, however, Jolie filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to published reports.
It was the second marriage for Jolie, 27, and the fifth for Thornton, 46. They met on the set of the 1999 film ''Pushing Tin,'' in which they played a married couple. They married in May 2000 and had seemed inseparable. In March, they adopted a Cambodian infant, whom they named Maddox. Since then, however, Jolie and Thornton had seen each other only a week out of the past four months, with Jolie spending much time in Africa and Thailand shooting the movie ''Beyond Borders'' and visiting refugee camps as a United Nations goodwill ambassador, while Thornton had been touring the U.S. and Europe with his band and recording new music in Memphis. ''It's clear to me that our priorities shifted overnight,'' the ''Lara Croft: Tomb Raider'' star said in the recent Us interview, noting that she hadn't seen her husband since June 3 and that they were now living in separate hotels.
''It's a sad thing,'' said Thornton's spokesman Thursday in a statement regarding the divorce filing. Jolie's publicist did not comment on the legal action. However, Reuters reported that, in the court papers, Jolie cited ''irreconcilable differences'' as the reason for the split and sought sole custody of Maddox. She also sought possession of ''miscellaneous jewelry and other personal effects,'' the filing read. No word on whether that refers to the vials of each other's blood the pair used to wear around their necks.
