ELIE WIESEL GOES HOME (2002)

In 1994, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel returned to Sighet, Romania (formerly in Hungary) -- the birthplace from which, 50 years earlier, he and most of the town's Jews were deported to concentration camps. Documenting his homecoming, filmmaker Judit Elek captures some achingly affecting moments as Wiesel tries to reconnect with a place he no longer knows. But it's when the film moves on to Auschwitz and Birkenau that it elicits the deepest of sorrows. Accompanied by William Hurt's impassioned narration (taken from Wiesel's writings), the film is a haunting evocation of one Holocaust survivor's unimaginable pain.
