What's true of everybody? (You might not want to know.) That, like the college-educated man who mows lawns for a living, ''you're forever who you were in the sixth grade.'' That, like the ninth grader who finds herself shackled to an impotent husband, you fall into things that come easy. That, like the smart-ass twin who switches majors 10 times before settling on ''recreation,'' you can change but still go nowhere. Winegardner's debut stories, many set in Ohio, exhibit a unified vision and an understated voice, though almost half of them pass by as quietly as many a Midwestern summer evening.
