Just Asking

Chuck D answers questions from EW readers, and you can send questions to Avril Lavigne

Q. Ever think of doing some sports announcing on the side?
-- Rob Schneck, Doylestown, Pa.

A. That was my first love. If I brushed up for a few months, I'd be as good as a lot of these cats. ''And he winds up, here's the pitch on the way, HIT WAY BACK IT'S...OUT OF HERE!'' It's quite similar to rapping.

Q. I have total respect for your music and lyrics, but why did you pair up with Flavor Flav, who just sort of screeched and ran around like a fool?
-- Wendy Siegel, Washington, D.C.

A. Well, it shows the diversity of black men. We don't separate the lawyer from the cat on the corner. We're still black men trying to figure out how to be united and be a positive force in the human race.

Q. When did you first fall in love with hip-hop?
-- Andrew Lin, Los Angeles

A. 1977. I heard cassettes of DJ Hollywood, DJ Smalls, Eddie Cheeba, Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel. I can't describe the feeling of hip-hop before it was on records. You didn't know where it was coming from or where you were going with it. I can't describe it to this day.

Next month: Young songstress Avril Lavigne. Send her a question. IMPORTANT: You must include your name and hometown for your question to be considered.
