B-
A red-eyed and mousy brown-haired Nicole Kidman continues to show her talent's more than skin deep in cowriter-director Jez Butterworth's sexy dark crimedy. The ever-versatile actress captivates as a Russian mail-order bride who fulfills the kinky dreams of a timid small-town bank clerk (a nicely nebbishy Chaplin) before two Russian comrades show up and crash their celebration. Butterworth's quiet thriller sparks with a few genuine surprises (like its subtly humorous undertone and Kidman's believable Russian accent), but hampered by a slow stride, this party can't keep pace with its featured guest.
