From 2001 to 8 1/2, Haiku Movie Reviews offers critiques that are by turns witty, sly, and, best of all, unfailingly concise. The review of Taxi Driver, for example, is a masterpiece of moderation: ''Massive depression/explodes with a massacre/Think I'll take the bus.'' Could Pauline Kael have said it better? HMR's only drawback -- aside from its need of an update -- is that its economy isn't limited to its haiku: The bare-bones site could also benefit from a good (or at least more adventurous) graphic invigoration. Still, we say: ''It's perfect for those/Fed up with the long-winded/Rants of film critics.''
