Despite Roland's (Aaron Eckhart) charms, Maud shuns him. What's that all about?
I think it's a very British thing. The British build and maintain these walls and it takes a while to break through, especially when it comes to Americans, where they're even more icy and guarded. They're very loyal and warm underneath, but they definitely put up that guard at first.
Neil LaBute (''In the Company of Men,'' ''Your Friends and Neighbors'') seems an odd choice to direct a love story.
Sometimes people are very offended by his material, but I really like the fact that he pushes boundaries. He obviously isn't the kind of guy of whom you'd think: ''Oh, he should direct this romance.'' But I think if you're intelligent and you have a point of view as a director, then you can do any subject. It doesn't matter if it's a really misogynistic movie about two men torturing a woman or a really nice love story about two academics.
What did it take to get you to do your recent ''Goldmember'' cameo?
I'm friends with Mike Myers and his wife, Robin. I would have done anything he asked me to do. Then it turned out that I got to wear a catsuit and make out with Tom Cruise. That was a good day at the office. If you can imagine all the people who were there that day -- Spielberg and Danny DeVito; Kevin Spacey and Mike Myers -- it was sort of like camp.
You sang on Sheryl Crow's album (''C'mon, C'mon'') and in the movie ''Duets.'' Are you exploring a music career at all?
I've been approached to do records, which is very flattering, but I don't see myself as the type to be put in a studio and be given a song that someone else wrote and then get all made up and have my hair blowing with a fan in a video. It's just not my style. If I asked, ''Will you guys give me money to write a record with [Pavement's] Stephen Malkmus?'' I don't think they'd be very excited. I would though.
