Clint Eastwood's acting is now all squint, rasp, sinew, and bone, but damned if he doesn't have a few tricks left in him. His new movie is a sturdy, if dawdling, adding-up-the-clues serial-killer mystery that turns out to be one or two notches cleverer than you expect. Eastwood's character is a retired FBI agent who turns solo investigator despite the fact that he's recently had a heart transplant. The star is now playing a man whose will is stronger than his body, and it's that tension -- between anger and frailty, steel and decay -- that powers the movie. As a goofy loser, Jeff Daniels springs a few image-retooling tricks of his own.
