It was beginning to seem as if Tamyra could do no wrong in this competition...that is, until she belted out a weak rendition of Patti LaBelle's ''New Attitutde.'' The judges didn't seem to notice some of the more flagrant off-key moments and softened their criticism. ''It's hard to do Patti,'' Randy offered, and Paula admitted, ''Great job, but it wasn't my favorite performance.'' B

Luckily, on the second round, Tamyra proved her vocal range with ''Feel the Fire'' and -- despite a sore throat -- belted out an emotionally charged performance as only Tamyra can. Though her singing wasn't as great as last week's (which was flawless), she more than redeemed her Patti mishap. Randy irritatingly said she ''did [her] thing,'' but Simon exclaimed it was ''world-class'' and ''absolutely superb.'' A-
