With all of Martha Stewart's current troubles, at least she won't have Ana Gasteyer to kick her around anymore. Gasteyer announced this week that she's leaving ''Saturday Night Live'' after six years.
Gasteyer, who played real-life celebs like Stewart and Celine Dion on the show, as well as original characters like mild-mannered NPR food-show host Margaret Jo and singer Jonette in R&B girl group Gemini's Twin, was the first performer in ''SNL'''s history to perform while pregnant. (She and her husband, graphic artist Charlie McKittrick, became parents of a daughter, Frances, in June.) Her announcement of her departure follows that of Will Ferrell, who, besides playing President George W. Bush, appeared in several sketches with Gasteyer as music teachers Marty Culp and Bobbi Moughan-Culp.
In a statement, the 35-year-old Gasteyer said, '''Saturday Night Live' was the ultimate laboratory for honing my versatility as a performer. As much as I will miss my enormously talented colleagues, I am looking forward to taking on new artistic challenges outside the realm of sketch comedy.''
As many of Gasteyer's ''SNL'' roles called on her to sing, it seems apt that her next career phase will involve Broadway. She appeared last year in the revival of ''The Rocky Horror Show'' and in ''The Vagina Monologues.'' Upcoming projects, according to Variety, include the Manhattan Theater Club's ''Kimberly Akimbo'' and a benefit performance for the Actors' Fund of ''Funny Girl,'' alongside Whoopi Goldberg and ''Will & Grace'''s Megan Mullally.
