When CBS announced on Tuesday that it was developing a reality version of ''The Beverly Hillbillies,'' where real-life poor country folk would be transplanted to a mansion in the land of swimming pools and movie stars, I joked that the network should also flip the concept and do a reality ''Green Acres'' and strand some rich city folk out in the countryside.
Turns out that Fox was way ahead of me. Variety reports that the rival network is, in fact, developing such a show, and has been for weeks. Bunim-Murray Productions, the reality pioneers responsible for MTV's ''The Real World,'' are behind the concept. ''I see a limo with a U-Haul attached,'' executive producer Jon Murray told Variety. ''There's going to be wonderful humor in this show, as there is with anyone who's a fish out of water. It's like when the first George Bush went to the supermarket and [apparently] didn't understand what a scanner was. It's a fun thing to watch.''
The show may or may not use the title ''Green Acres,'' since producers would have to pay to license its use from the current rights holders. It's also undecided whether the show would move an individual or a whole family to the country, or whether the protagonists would be ordinary rich people or celebrities like the Osbournes or Anna Nicole Smith. Note to the producers: Eva Gabor, who starred in the original '60s sitcom, is unfortunately no longer with us, but her sister Zsa Zsa is probably available.
