''My Big Fat Greek Wedding'' screenwriter and star Nia Vardalos may have made her low-budget indie movie as a labor of love, but now that the film has become the sleeper hit of the year and is poised to rake in $100 million at the box office, she's due for a big fat paycheck from a big fat Hollywood studio. Variety reports that she's signed a deal worth seven figures with Disney-based Spyglass Entertainment to write and star in another comedy, which would shoot next spring.
The movie is called ''Connie and Carla Do L.A.'' The plot is being kept under wraps, but Variety describes it as a female buddy comedy in the vein of ''Some Like It Hot'' (but presumably with real females this time, not men in drag), with prominent musical elements.
By the time the film shoots in early 2003, Vardalos may already be a TV star as well. Last spring, before ''Wedding'' was released, she shot a similarly autobiographical sitcom pilot for CBS. It didn't get picked up for the soon-to-start fall season, but it is expected to get picked up as a midseason series, if not by CBS, then by another network, Variety reports.
