TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL CBS, 8-9 PM
Good Lord, is this show still on the air? The apocalypse is truly upon us -- and upon divine messenger Monica (Roma Downey). Creator Martha Williamson says the season will open with ''a cataclysmic event. It's always good to start with the end of the world and then go from there.'' Catastrophe also touches Tess (Della Reese) when she's stricken with Alzheimer's disease. As for the immature Gloria (Valerie Bertinelli), ''she's grown a lot over the hiatus,'' says Williamson. ''And we had to find the right glasses -- we've been going through glasses like crazy.'' Okay, bring on the apocalypse. Please. (Sept. 28)
THE DISTRICT CBS, 9-10 PM
Speaking of angels, Jaclyn Smith will return this season as a civil rights attorney who becomes a love interest for top D.C. cop Jack Mannion (Craig T. Nelson). Detective Temple Page (Save the Last Dance's Sean Patrick Thomas) embarks on a new romance of his own with Mannion's press secretary. She'll be played by Dr. Dolittle's Kristen Wilson, who'll do at least eight episodes, as will Ving Rhames as the U.S. attorney general. ''He's such a brilliant actor,'' says exec producer John Wirth. ''We need somebody of that caliber to go up against Craig, because Craig has a lot of power.'' Just ask Jerry Van Dyke. (Sept. 28)
