Personified by John Mayer, the new breed of singer-songwriter is a sunny, perky sort. L.A. alt-folkie Todd recalls the good old days, when these musicians were dour, sulky, and self-absorbed. Her major-label debut is a spartan showcase for her stern, breathy voice and luxuriant melodies, both of which can be beguiling. Her Zen-palate lyrics are jaw-droppingly pretentious, but when the pieces fall together -- as in the departure ballad ''Autumn'' -- Todd gives solipsism a good name.
