Can Angelina Jolie do what Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, and Jennifer Lopez have been unable to do? That is, revive the long-in-development thriller ''Taking Lives''? A few weeks ago, according to the Hollywood Reporter, she was offered the starring role of an FBI profiler in the film, which had been offered to those other stars at various times over the past three years. Now, the trade paper reports, she may be getting a boost from Ethan Hawke, who would step in to play the serial killer she tracks.
The movie takes its title from the killer's M.O.: He's a young Dutchman who assumes the identities of his victims as he travels across America. According to the Reporter, there's no director attached to the Warner Bros. project yet, though Tony Scott (''Top Gun,'' ''Spy Game'') was going to direct the film when it looked like it would get made last year. There's also no start date for the movie -- just as well, since Jolie is busy in England making the sequel to ''Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.''
