Rafael (Ricardo Darin) is a 42-year-old workaholic, estranged from most of his family members and noncommittal to his girlfriend, when a near-death experience and an unexpected visit lead him to see the error of his ways. ''Son of the Bride,'' Juan Jose Campanella's Spanish-language Argentinean feature, is a hilarious, poignant romance that offers a fresh take on the classic theme of redemption through love. The standout performance comes from Norma Aleandro, whose expressive eyes give depth and complexity to the character of Rafael's Alzheimer's-stricken mother. Her acting alone makes the best-foreign-film Oscar nominee worthwhile.
