Who's Putting Out What and Why

THE LABEL Naked Music

ESTABLISHED December 1998

AESTHETIC Okay, so it's Barcelona-based graphic artist Stuart Patterson's sexy, retro artwork that first nabs your attention. But it's Naked's signature sound--a smooth merger of classic soul and contemporary electronic dance--that seduces. As for Patterson's album-cover nymphets, label manager Bruno Ybarra admits: "We don't really give him any directives other than 'Can we please try to do something without as many breasts?' But he's an artist, so we have to respect him."

ESSENCE "When you strip away all the production, all the bells and whistles, you still have something there," says Ybarra. "A lot of dance music might be married with a partial vocal or a sample, but it was becoming more and more uncommon to hear full song material on the records. We are concentrating on songwriting as opposed to keeping people shaking their asses on the dance floor."

ESSENTIALS Blue Six's Beautiful Tomorrow (2002) and Nude Dimensions Vol. 1 (2001), mixed by Naked "poster boy" DJ Miguel Migs. EXPECT... Migs to drop his solo debut, Colorful You, this October.
