'Spray' On

Scott Brown's piece on the new Broadway musical version of Hairspray was less a review than an ooh-look-at-the-big-people commentary (''The Big Tease''). Granted, the size of the story's heroine is intrinsic to the plot. But this line is not essential to the review: ''He [Harvey Fierstein] and [Marissa Jaret]Winokur have the combined stage presence and body mass of the entire Cirque du Soleil.'' Please explain to me how this comment relates to the quality of the production. What insight does this superfluous snark about ''body mass'' add to this review? CORRECTIONS: Blue Crush is set on Oahu, not Maui (Movies). We misspelled Hairspray co-lyricist Scott Wittman's name (Stage).
