The 27-year-old pianist Jason Moran covers much of the past century on his dazzling solo CD, Modernistic, and displays why he's a leader for this one. He dances through a James P. Johnson stride and swings gently on the classic ''Body and Soul.'' Best of all are an innovative cover of the Afrika Bambaataa '80s rap tune ''Planet Rock'' and two takes on his own someday standard, ''Gangsterism.''
